Description
is an autobiographical account of what it is to be a contemporary artist based in the North East of England. Or indeed, what it is to enter art worlds from a marginilised community where being an artist is just an absurd idea that nobody takes seriously.
Part prose, part theory, part stream of conciousness, Hesse leads us on a journey from childhood to contemporary visual artist bringing all of her ghosts along with us. A story without beginning or end and in no particular order, Blackbirds is at times a challenge to read in shouting capital letters, through which we experience the desperation to be heard when words constantly fall on deaf ears.
Origianlly commissioned for the show ‘The Everyday Political,’ by Curator George Vasey and Workplace Director Paul Moss.
